Fourth of July in Falmouth

There’s nothing quite like the Fourth of July on Cape Cod, especially in Falmouth, named one of the Top Ten fireworks displays in the country. Want to find out what all the buzz is about? We’ve got you covered…

It doesn’t get more Americana than Falmouth on the Fourth of July. The population swells every Independence Day, bringing visitors from literally all over the world to celebrate the nation’s birth in the seaside town where Katharine Lee Bates was born, which inspired the lyrics to America the Beautiful. In Falmouth, you can celebrate our nation’s birth “from sea to shining sea.”

Who Doesn't Love a Parade

Whether you’re walking, biking, or pushing the baby, the whole family can take part in Falmouth Village Association’s Bike and Carriage Parade down Main Street. The event begins at 10 am on July 4 at the Village Green. After be sure to check out Falmouth Public Library’s outdoor book sale to stock up on beach reads before heading to the quirkiest Independence Day celebration you’ll ever experience. The Woods Hole Fourth of July parade, founded by the Marine Biological Laboratory, features music, costumes, and dancing, all in celebration of science. This uniquely nerdy event kicks off at noon on School Street in Woods Hole, ending at Waterfront Park near the Rachel Carson statue.

Limited Access to Falmouth Heights

Spectators of all ages flock to Falmouth to catch the fireworks display deemed one of the Top Ten in the country by Travel & Leisure. If you’re looking for the authentic Falmouth experience, head to Falmouth Heights, where the festivities get underway by late afternoon on July 4. Fourth of July is also the biggest beach day of the year, for many visitors set up camp at the Heights long before the sun goes down. Be advised there is limited access to the Heights beginning at 6 pm when the Falmouth Police Department closes the roads to vehicle traffic, and a parking ban goes into effect at 4 pm. Therefore, your best bet is to park outside the area and finish on foot. Keep reading for our suggestions on parking…

An Unforgettable Display

The Falmouth Fireworks display kicks off at Falmouth Heights Beach at dusk, around 9 pm. This spectacular show lasts for about a half hour. Park your car at the Falmouth Mall, near Wal-Mart, or the Falmouth Plaza, near Staples, and enjoy a short, leisurely walk into the Heights. It’ll also save you time on the way home instead of sitting in traffic. The Falmouth Heights ballpark and beach offer prime viewing, but get ready to share it with thousands of fellow spectators. You can enjoy an equally spectacular show with a more mellow vibe next door at Bristol Beach, or on the other side of the harbor at Surf Drive. You can also catch the show at Marine Park, right next to the Flying Bridge Restaurant, where Falmouth Town Band will be performing at the bandshell before the fireworks at 7:30. It’s a wonderful slice of American life you don’t want to miss. But no matter where you set up your beach blanket, you won’t be disappointed…
