Rachel Carson Day in Woods Hole

The village of Woods Hole was bustling on September 15 in celebration of  “The Sea Around Us,” and the legacy of Rachel Carson, whose groundbreaking work “Silent Spring,” was published on September 27, 1962. This free family fun day was presented by the Woods Hole Business Association and the Woods Hole Science Community. The festivities began with the truly Woodsholian “Anything But a Boat Race” followed by the “Take Back The Beach Ball” hosted by Quicks Hole Taqueria and The Landfall. Read all about it…

Rachel's Legacy

Rachel Carson changed the world with her groundbreaking work, “Silent Spring,” published on September 27, 1962. But Ms. Carson’s early writing, such as “The Sea Around Us,” was influenced by her love affair with the ocean, which began when she was a 22-year-old summer researcher with the Marine Biological Laboratory  Did you know Rachel first learned to swim in the waters of Woods Hole? For the past three years, the Woods Hole Business Association and the science community have collaborated to celebrate this iconic figure, while also heralding the what’s known as “Local Summer.”

WHOI and MBL kicked off the sublime summer day with interactive fun for marine enthusiasts of all ages at Waterfront Park, right near the Rachel Carson statue, followed by the Anything But a Boat Race presented by NOAA and WHOI.

As always, the entries were inventive and creative…

Thankfully, this Titanic fared better than its namesake…

And once again, the WHOI Carpenter Shop brought their A-Game.

This year’s entry by the Sons of Carpentry paid tribute to both Rachel Carson, and their late friend and longtime  colleague, Craig Henderson.

Kudos to Team Quicks Hole for earned the enviable title of Most Submerged!

Crowds gathered on both land and sea to catch the epic event.

Right after, Retro Roots got the party started at the Take Back the Beach Ball…

And Old Silver Band and Friends featured a collaboration of extreme local talent…

With DJ XP adding to the atmosphere…

A perfect way to end a busy summer. We can’t wait for next year…
